Kurinji Andavar Temple

Lord Muruga beckons you to come to Kurinji Andavar for he is the presiding deity, also called God of Hills. The temple is popular not only with devotees but, also with tourists that come here expecting to see the rare Kurinji flower. It blooms hereafter every 12 years and is treated like a precious jewel. This positioned at 3 kilometers away from Kodai Lake, this temple pulls large crowds. The architecture of this temple is typically Dravidian in style and looks very beautiful. Once here, you can also enjoy looking at the Vaigai Dam and Palani.

Kurinji Andavar Temple History

This temple is not just any other abode of worship, it has a rich historical past. It was constructed in 1936 by Lady Leelavathi Ramanathan, an Australian who married the Solicitor General of Ceylon called PonnambalamRamanatham. Hindu scriptures inspired her so much that she converted into a Hindu, and after her husband died, she built this temple commemorating his memory.

May is the peak season when a summer festival is held at the premises. During this time, it is common to see the temple jam-packed with local devotees and travelers. It is quite close to Kodai Lake and many other places. One can also buy stuff from many shops that sell a variety of things inside the temple premises. Honey is one such thing that you must buy especially when the Kurinji blooms are blossoming. Such honey is said to cure many illnesses as it possesses medicinal value. In addition to the idol of Muruga, there are nine idols of planet gods kept here. This is one of the things to do in Kodaikanal

If you come by your own car or by a hired cab, you would need to pay Rs 5 to the authorities. Entry is totally free. The visiting hours are from seven in the morning to seven in the evening. There are a few locals who can offer guide services. However, government-approved guides are not available. If you plan to come here during peak summer months, you may find a lot of people thronging the temple. Therefore, it is suggested that you come here early in the morning when you can see the scenic beauty around and pay your homage to Muruga. There is another restriction for the tourists- photography and video shooting is not allowed inside the temple premises. You can take a bus or taxi to come here. 

Kurinji Andavar Temple Dress Code

The devotee should take a bath before entering the temple and no shoes/footwears are allowed inside of the temple. Men should wear Dhoti/Pajama or Formal Pants and Shirts. Women must wear Ethnic wear and kids must wear any fully covered dress. Must avoid jeans, leggings, and lungis.

This is one of the best places to visit in Kodaikanal.
